Our Chapter focuses on helping student projects, organizing our annual fundraising banquet in the Spring, hosting a Workshop Weekend in the Fall, and attending EWB conferences throughout the year. Even if you’re not an engineer, you can still join! There are a variety of ways in which you can become involved with EWB, including (but not limited to) traveling with the student groups, mentoring students, assisting with newsletter development, organizing events and fundraising. Come to a meeting or sign-up today to see how you can contribute. We look forward to seeing you there!
MENTORING
These are the current EWB UW-Madison programs where some of our members are providing mentoring support for the university students. If you would like to get involved with one, please contact the groups via email or click on the photos to learn more.
The EWB-USA Mentors Program is intended to help provide guidance for student chapters. As all engineering projects have some degree of risk, a project mentor acts as an experienced set of eyes during the engineering process, from initial design through the final implementation. In addition to the technical expertise provided by mentors there are a number of non-technical areas a mentor can provide guidance. Due to the geographic scope of EWB-USA projects, cultural knowledge and communication is just as important as the final engineering design. To learn more about being a mentor and resources available to you, visit our Mentor Resources page.
PROFESSIONAL LED PROJECT
MAPC partnered with two communities in Guatemala - the Guatemalan Ministry of Education, and the Rotary Club of Los Altos Quetzaltenango - to complete our recent school development project. The aim of these projects was to develop infrastructure to create a healthy, hygienic, and safe school environment. The nearly 75 students and staff at the Los Lucas school used to share only two pit latrines which were located a steep hike away from the school, were no longer sanitary, and were enclosed by a ripped tarp. The school also experienced seasonal flooding where water and mud would cover the floors of some classrooms. The 150 students in La Loma had latrines isolated from the school building, creating a security risk for the students. These students also shared a single faucet for hand washing. Our team was able to partner with these communities to provide student and staff bathrooms, hand-washing stations, and other infrastructure to help meet these schools needs and allow students and educators to focus on education.
