MENTOR TASK FORCE
The role of the Professional Mentor on EWB-USA projects is an important one and requires a significant commitment from the individual assuming it. The EWB-MAPC Mentor Task Force is intended to create a community of mentors and resources to help mentors engage with student projects and navigate the project process. Explore the items below, visit Volunteer Village, or contact us to help you get started as a mentor!
PROFESSIONAL MENTOR RESOURCE HANDOUT
This document was developed by the EWB-USA Mentor Standing Content Committee to provide a comprehensive background on mentoring across EWB-USA. The purpose of this document is to explain mentoring to both mentors and mentees throughout the organization and to provide a single, usable document for mentor resources and general guidance.

RESPONSIBLE ENGINEER IN CHARGE (REIC)On a project-by-project basis, each project team will designate a Responsible Engineer in Charge (REIC) who will take the ultimate responsibility for the project. The REIC may travel on assessment, implementation, and monitoring trips, providing technical guidance on the designs, ensuring all reports are submitted to EWB-USA on time, and providing interim internal review and approval of final designs (with signature and date).

EWB PROJECT PROCESS
Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) is committed to community-driven development projects. Each International Community Program (ICP) is driven by and developed to meet the specific needs, resources and constraints of the partnering community(s). The project process manual and the project process flowchart summarize ICP project process phases and timelines. These documents guide chapters through each phase with instructions, links and review criteria for all the documentation that needs to be submitted as well as examples of ICP Projects. It is recommended to start here whether you are a new chapter starting your first project or an experienced chapter learning Volunteer Village.
ICP CHECKLISTS
This article lists all the design checklists that are available to chapters. Chapters should review these checklists prior to preparing their design plans. Plans prepared without the use of the checklists, may be incomplete and require additional review time. If you have a question about the applicability of the checklist to your project, please contact your program engineer.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT PROCESS |
QA/QC Matrix |
Providing high quality engineering solutions, using appropriate technology, is one of the core values of Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA). This article on the EWB Quality Management Process describes a methodology where high quality technical documents can be developed that will maximize the probability of the successful implementation of the best possible solution for the partner community. The quality of each EWB-USA program is the responsibility of the chapter that has adopted the program. Ultimately, the Responsible Engineer in Charge (REIC) is responsible for the quality of all documents and projects developed as part of the program.

The RASP matrix is a responsibility assignment matrix, designed to assign tasks to specific roles for producing, supporting, and approving EWB-USA work products. The goal of this tool is to ensure quality control assurance (QA/QC) to the project process and to clarify expectations on the various roles. The four types of roles below are associated to a task represented in the QA/QC RASP Matrix.
Responsible (R) – Takes responsibility and oversees work completed by producers Approve (A) – Approve work completed by producers and the responsible person Support (S) – Provides consultation and advice Produce (P) – Does the work under direction of responsible person |
